Volvo has launched its first commercial vehicle in the UK with the EX30 Cargo, a fully electric car-derived van based on its EX30 compact SUV.

Available to order now through Volvo’s fleet sales channels, the EX30 Cargo is priced from £28,995 plus VAT and fees, with deliveries expected later this year.

Rather than a ground-up commercial vehicle, the EX30 Cargo is a second-stage conversion of the standard EX30, carried out by Volvo in the UK. The rear seats have been removed and replaced with a flat load floor, while a full-height bulkhead separates the cabin from the cargo area.

The result is a load volume of 1,000 litres and a payload of 390kg — figures that place it firmly in the centre of its car-derived van rivals rather than as an alternative to a traditional small van.

Explaining the thinking behind the launch, Jack Munford, head of fleet at Volvo Car UK, said: “While we are best known for our passenger vehicles, we recognise that business owners and fleets also want the quality, safety and technology that Volvo is renowned for in a compact commercial vehicle too, which is why we created the extremely practical EX30 Cargo.”

Volvo has also added wider-opening rear doors, a cargo work light and additional mounting points beneath the load floor to improve usability.

Electric power and performance

The EX30 Cargo retains the same electric drivetrain options as the passenger car.

A 272hp single motor model is available across the range, with a standard or extended range battery pack. The top-spec Plus trim also adds a 428hp Twin Motor Performance all-wheel-drive model – the 0-62mph sprint takes just 3.6 seconds, so hopefully you won’t be carrying any delicate cargo.

A 150hp Extended Range version will be introduced for 2027 models.

The standard range models are fitted with a 49kWh battery pack, providing up to 209 miles of range, depending on specification. A larger 65kWh battery powers the Extended Range and Twin Motor Performance models, giving up to 295 miles of range for the former, and dropping to 279 miles for the quicker model.

An 11kW onboard charger and heat pump are fitted as standard to support efficiency and usability, while rapid charging can be carried out at up to 134kW for the smaller battery model or 153kW for the Extended Range and Twin Motor models.

High specification for a compact van

As expected from Volvo, the EX30 Cargo focuses heavily on safety and in-cabin technology.

Even entry-level Core models include adaptive cruise control, Google-based infotainment, and a suite of driver assistance systems. Front and rear parking sensors, along with a rear-view camera, are also standard.

Plus models add features such as Pilot Assist, heated seats, a heated steering wheel and a Harman Kardon sound system — equipment levels that go well beyond what’s typical in the van sector.

Part of a wider shift in the market

The Ford Fiesta Van was killed off in 2022 and could have marked the end of the car-derived van market, but the switch to electric power means the market is now booming.

Models such as the BYD Dolphin Cargo, Citroen e-C3 Van, Dacia Spring Cargo, Ford Explorer Van and Skoda Enyaq Cargo follow a similar approach, offering low running costs and favourable tax treatment in exchange for limited payload and load space.

With a payload of 390kg, the EX30 Cargo is unlikely to suit traditional trades. Instead, it is aimed at fleets and businesses operating in urban environments where emissions, image and driver comfort take priority over outright carrying capacity.
