BYD’s push into the UK light commercial vehicle market shows no sign of slowing, with a cargo version of the BYD Dolphin hatchback emerging as the brand’s latest likely addition.

After dipping its toe into the LCV space with the ETP 3, Professional Van understands that the BYD Dolphin Cargo is edging closer to reality, giving the manufacturer a presence in the compact car-derived van segment ahead of its plans for the Shark 6 pickup and the forthcoming e-Vali large electric van.

What is the BYD Dolphin Cargo?

Rather than a traditional small van, the BYD Dolphin Cargo sits in the car-derived van (CDV) category, trading rear seats for a dedicated load area — a format increasingly seen with small EVs such as the Citroen e-C3 Van and the forthcoming Renault 4 E-Tech van.

Dimensionally and mechanically, the Dolphin Cargo is closely aligned with the standard Dolphin hatchback already on sale in the UK. The entry-level Comfort model, priced at £30,230, provides the most obvious donor vehicle, pairing a sizeable battery with competitive range and performance figures.

Electric powertrain

Under the skin, the Dolphin Cargo is expected to retain the same core electrical hardware as the passenger car.

That means a 60.4 kWh Blade Battery (LFP) driving a front-mounted electric motor producing 204hp and 310Nm of torque. Performance is brisk by commercial vehicle standards, with a quoted 0–62 mph time of around seven seconds and a top speed of 99 mph.

More relevant for operators is the range and charging profile. A combined WLTP range of up to 265 miles positions the Dolphin Cargo strongly for urban and regional work, while DC rapid charging at up to 100 kW allows for an 80% recharge in roughly half an hour under ideal conditions.

On paper at least, the drivetrain offers considerably more range than many established compact electric vans.

BYD Dolphin Cargo cargo and payload

As expected for a CDV, payload capacity is modest rather than transformative.

The passenger Dolphin carries a gross vehicle weight of just over two tonnes, and Professional Van understands the Cargo variant will offer a payload of up to 393 kg, placing it firmly in the lightweight duty bracket.

Although that’s roughly 30% more payload than a Citroen e-C3 Van, this is still not a vehicle aimed at trades requiring bulk or heavy loads, but one suited to parcel delivery, service work, and urban logistics.

Load dimensions suggest a practical but compact cargo area, with a low load height aiding accessibility. The emphasis is clearly on efficiency, manoeuvrability, and ease of use rather than outright carrying ability.

BYD Dolphin Cargo pricing and availability

BYD has not announced UK timing for the Dolphin Cargo, but its arrival would neatly complement the brand’s widening commercial vehicle ambitions. The manufacturer has confirmed the Shark 6 pickup, a plug-in hybrid model expected to challenge established diesel rivals, while the e-Vali large electric van remains on the roadmap.

Taken together, these vehicles indicate that BYD is pursuing a multi-segment strategy rather than targeting a single corner of the LCV market.

Formal specifications, pricing, and timing for the Dolphin Cargo are still to be confirmed.
