The next-generation Ford Ranger will be available with a 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine, bringing a boost in power and torque to the popular pickup truck.
While the Ranger Raptor, revealed this morning, will grab the headlines thanks to its 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine, the regular Ranger hasn’t been forgotten.
The next-generation model, due to arrive in the UK in early 2023, will retain the current lineup of engines, which means there’s a 2.0-lite diesel engine boosted by either a single turbo or bi-turbo system.
However, the new model will also be available with a 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 diesel engine, making it the most powerful Ranger ever made, outside of the high-performance specials.
While Ford is keeping the specifics under wraps, for now, we expect it to provide a healthy 258hp and 600Nm of torque.
The same engine will also be fitted to the Volkswagen Amarok, matching the highest output the German model had from its homegrown V6 diesel unit.

Next-Gen Ford Ranger: V6 Diesel Engine
Developed by Ford of Europe, the new engine has seen service in multiple vehicles to date, including the US-market F-150 full-size pickup. The 60-degree vee engine block uses compacted-graphite iron to increase strength, a forged-steel crankshaft, double overhead camshafts, common-rail fuel injectors and aluminium heads.
Twin-turbochargers with an intercooler, variable geometry and over-boost capability will add to the total power output and flexibility. The two turbochargers operate on a series-sequential system, using a smaller turbo when the engine is running at low revs, before bringing in the larger turbocharger once the engine revs have risen to around 2,800rpm.

Next-Gen Ford Ranger: V6 Diesel Engine Built in Britain
Built in Britain at Ford’s plant in Dagenham, the engines will initially be available in the Ranger Wildtrak model. The existing range of engines, all 2.0-litre units with power outputs ranging from 130hp to 213hp, will remain available across all Ranger models.
The 3.0-litre petrol engine will be fitted exclusively to the Raptor high-performance pickup.
Opened in 1931, the Ford Dagenham plant is the largest producer of Ford diesel engines globally. More than 50 million engines have left the facility since it opened 91 years ago.
The site has also been chosen as the location for MS-RT’s vehicle conversion centre. The Ford Pro partner and design-led automotive engineering company create specialised Ford vehicles such as the stylish road-focussed Ranger MS-RT. The new facility is to provide work for more than 50 new employees when it opens in 2022, rising to over 120 new jobs when fully operational.
