Volkswagen has given us the clearest view yet of its next-generation Amarok pickup truck, destined to arrive in the UK in 2023.
Adding to the images released in December and March of last year, the new teaser is still nothing more than a rendered image. Volkswagen’s latest official pictures do reveal more of the detail in the new Amarok though, including its increased dimensions; at 5.35m long, it’s 10cm longer than the previous generation model.
The “near-production sketches” give a clear view of the profile of the truck, showing off some aggressively extended wheel arches and low-profile tyres – both items that are unlikely to make it to the production vehicles. However, the basic DNA of the design is obvious.
“We emphasise the different, expressive front designs of our pick-up with a charismatic Amarok signature that is also found with very large letters on the cargo box at the rear and is sported very proudly by the Amarok,” says Albert-Johann Kirzinger, head of design at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles. “The styling bar as a visual extension of the double cab in the cargo box once again gives the Amarok’s body dynamic, aerodynamic and very strong proportions.”
The new Amarok will once again feature V6 power, with the manufacturer confirming that the pickup, positioned to target the premium market, will receive a six-cylinder turbodiesel power unit. An increase in power and torque over the previous model is expected, but Volkswagen has yet to confirm figures.
Volkswagen promises that numerous driver assistance systems will be fitted to the pickup, many for the first time in the segment, and that these will make daily driving more comfortable for Amarok customers. The comfort, connectivity and ambience in the completely new interior will also ensure that the new Amarok raises the benchmark for pickups.
Improved off-road performance is also assured, with the Amarok sharing the same platform and drivetrain as the next-generation Ford Ranger.
