We’re big fans of the Toyota Relax warranty, which can cover a Proace van or Hilux pickup for up to 10 years, providing peace of mind for those keeping hold of their commercial vehicles for more than a few years.
While larger fleets might renew their vehicles frequently, owner-operators and small businesses are more likely to keep their vans beyond the end of a finance agreement, so having manufacturer support for any faults is not just reassuring but could also be a significant money saver.
However, as with any warranty, the fine print contains certain conditions and exclusions that could leave you footing the bill.
Toyota Relax Warranty: Key takeaways
- Every Toyota model is covered – That’s the Corolla Commercial, Hilux pickup, Proace, Proace City and Proace Max vans, and Land Cruiser Commercial 4×4.
- Up to 10 Years / 100,000 Miles – The warranty is renewed for 12 months with every Toyota-approved service, up to the limit.
- Toyota Dealer Servicing Required – You must service your pickup at an authorised Toyota repairer to maintain warranty coverage.
- Pre-Existing Faults Not Covered – Any issues present before a qualifying service won’t be repaired under warranty.
- Wear and Tear Parts Not Covered – Brakes, clutch, suspension, tyres, bulbs, batteries, and service items are excluded.
- Modifications May Void the Warranty – Non-Toyota parts or tuning (e.g., remaps, exhaust upgrades) could cancel coverage.
- Transfers with the Vehicle – If you sell your pickup, the warranty stays with it for the next owner.

We’ve gone through all 3,306 words of the Toyota Relax terms and conditions, and here’s what we think you need to know to avoid getting caught out.
You get another year of cover with every service, but pre-existing conditions aren’t included
Unlike some extended warranties, Toyota Relax does not require a continuous service history. If a vehicle has missed previous services, the warranty can still be activated upon the next qualifying service. However, pre-existing faults or damage that occurred before the service will not be covered.
Clause 6(a): “Customers can gain an additional 12 months/10,000 miles […] warranty from each Service, year after year, until the 10-year/100,000-mile […] limit is reached,” and Clause 15: “The Additional Warranty does not provide cover for: e) Any pre-existing faults with the Vehicles at the time of service.”
What this means for you:
- The warranty is renewed with every Toyota-approved service, up to 10 years/100,000 miles.
- The warranty lapses if a service is skipped but can be reinstated at the next qualifying service.
- Pre-existing faults are not covered, so issues present before a service won’t be eligible for repair under warranty.
- Any pre-existing faults repaired by Toyota at your cost will have their components covered by the renewed warranty.

Servicing at Toyota dealerships is mandatory
Unlike some warranties that allow independent garages to carry out services, Toyota’s Relax Warranty is only valid if the vehicle is serviced by an Authorised Toyota Repairer. Failing to service the vehicle at a Toyota-approved workshop means the warranty is void.
Clause 12(c): “Damage or defects as a result of any failure to maintain or repair the vehicle in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations” are not covered.
What this means for you:
- To maintain coverage, you must ensure all servicing is done at an official Toyota dealer
. - If you prefer independent garages or self-servicing, the extended warranty won’t apply.

10-Year/100,000-mile limit
Toyota’s Relax Warranty extends coverage up to 10 years or 100,000 miles (whichever comes first). However, once your vehicle crosses either threshold, you lose coverage.
Clause 6: “The 10-year/100,000-mile (whichever comes first) limit runs from the day the vehicle was first registered.”
What this means for you:
- High-mileage users (such as couriers and fleet operators) could hit the 100,000-mile cap long before reaching 10 years.
- Consider budgeting for potential repair costs if you plan to keep the van or pickup beyond these limits.
Vehicles used for specific purposes are excluded
Toyota excludes warranty coverage for vehicles used in certain demanding conditions, including:
- Police, fire, ambulance, and emergency service vehicles
- Track, race, or extreme off-road use
- Vehicles registered to garages, retailers, or commercial hire firms
Clause 15: “The Additional Warranty does not provide cover for […] (c) Vehicles which are used for races or other associated track driving; (d) Police vehicles, fire service vehicles, ambulances and vehicles used by any other emergency service.”
What this means for you:
- Off-roaders or those using their vehicles for motorsport should be aware of exclusions.
- The term ‘extreme off-road use’ is not clearly defined, which could allow Toyota discretion in rejecting claims for faults that occur while driving on rough terrain.
- If your van is used for commercial passenger transport (such as private hire or taxi work), check with Toyota to see if it qualifies.

Wear and tear items are not covered
Toyota’s Relax Warranty does not cover wear and tear parts, even if they contribute to a mechanical failure.
Clause 13: “Types of parts and components not covered by the Additional Warranty includes, but are not limited to: (a) Maintenance parts (e.g. parts that have to be replaced periodically, filters, brake pads, linings, shoes and cables, clutch disc, clutch cover and clutch bearing), wheels, rims, tyres.”
Key exclusions include:
- Clutch components (clutch disc, cover, and bearing)
- Brakes (pads, discs, linings, and cables)
- Exhaust system from the manifold gasket to the outlet
- Suspension bushes and shock absorbers
- Tyres, batteries, wiper blades, and light bulbs
- Spark plugs, filters, and other service items
- Multimedia screen and buttons
What this means for you:
- Even though these parts are essential to vehicle operation, they aren’t covered under the warranty.
- Toyota may deny the claim if a worn-out part leads to additional damage.

Aftermarket parts and modifications can void the warranty
If you install non-Toyota parts or modify your vehicle, you risk voiding the Relax Warranty.
Clause 12(j): “Damage or defects caused by modifications of the original vehicle design or the installation of certain accessories” are not covered.
Exclusions include:
- Performance tuning (e.g., remaps, aftermarket ECUs, turbo upgrades)
- Non-Toyota tow bars, wheels, or other aftermarket accessories
- Alterations to suspension, exhaust, or drivetrain
What this means for you:
- Toyota can refuse to cover repairs if a modification is linked to a failure.
- Genuine Toyota accessories must be installed within three months of vehicle registration to be covered.
Consequential damage may not be covered
Toyota’s warranty terms do not explicitly state that damage caused by the failure of a non-covered part is excluded. However, warranty coverage applies specifically to listed components, meaning that failures caused by unlisted or excluded parts may not be covered.
Clause 12(h): “Damage or defects as a result of consequential damage caused by non-Toyota-genuine accessories or special equipment” is not covered, and Clause 15(f): “Damage or defects caused by use of an item which recognizably requires repair, unless the damage can be proven to be unconnected to the item requiring repair.”
What this means for you:
- If a component that is not covered under the warranty fails and causes further damage, Toyota may decline coverage for the resulting repairs.
- If a part was known to be faulty but left unrepaired, any damage linked to its failure may not be covered unless you can prove it was unrelated.
- If you suspect a worn component, get it replaced before it leads to a more significant issue.
- If in doubt, consult Toyota before relying on the warranty for any repair linked to a previously failed part.

Overseas repairs must be paid upfront
If your vehicle breaks down abroad, you must pay for the repair yourself and claim reimbursement within 28 days.
Clause 18: “The cost should be settled by you with the repairer and a claim made for reimbursement by providing the repair invoice to an Authorised Toyota Repairer.”
What this means for you:
- You need to keep all receipts and paperwork from the repair.
- Toyota will only reimburse costs based on UK pricing, so there may be a shortfall.
- You have to get your claim in within 28 days of the repair.
European cover has some surprising exclusions
Toyota Relax offers coverage for repairs while travelling within Europe, but there are some surprising omissions from the list of eligible countries.
Clause 19: “The geographical scope of the Additional Warranty includes the following countries: Albania, Austria, Azerbaijan, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Montenegro, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey and United Kingdom.”
Notably absent from the list are:
- Sweden and Slovakia – both of which are EU member states.
- Andorra, Bosnia and Herzegovina, San Marino, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Moldova, North Macedonia, Belarus, and Ukraine.
What this means for you:
- If a failure occurs while travelling, you will not be covered for warranty repairs in any of the excluded countries.
The warranty stays with the vehicle
If you sell the pickup or van, the Toyota Relax Warranty transfers to the next owner.
Clause 22: “The Additional Warranty is transferable to subsequent owners of the vehicle but not transferable to another vehicle.”
What this means for you:
- If you buy a used Toyota with an active warranty, you benefit from any remaining cover.
- If you sell your van or pickup, the new buyer benefits from any warranty cover on the vehicle at the time.
Final Thoughts
The Toyota Relax Warranty is one of the better extended warranties available, but Hilux pickup owners must be mindful of the conditions and exclusions. The biggest catch is the servicing requirement — if you don’t stick to Toyota’s servicing schedule at an authorised dealer, you risk voiding your coverage.
Before relying on the Relax Warranty, take a close look at your vehicle’s use, modifications, and maintenance history. If in doubt, always clarify details with Toyota to avoid unexpected costs down the line.
