The ID Buzz is going to be the basis of future autonomous driving efforts from Volkswagen, with a vision of production vehicles debuting in 2025, but there are plenty of other new developments coming before then.

New Volkswagen Commercial Models Coming

Carsten Intra, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ CEO, recently presented a 10-point plan for 2023, with concrete targets and actions contributing to Volkswagen’s GRIP 2030 corporate vision. These include further electrification of the Volkswagen commercial vehicle fleet.

In summer 2023, the long-wheelbase ID Buzz will be presented, with North America seeing the reintroduction of the classic Bulli based on this model. After the Multivan, the Caddy will be the next LCV to be offered as a plug-in hybrid. In the future, the battery-electric offering from the Ford-Volkswagen alliance will be expanded by adding a van in the one-tonne payload segment.

Volkswagen will build on the success of its California model range by adding digital features and services to create a ‘California Universe’, bundling everything related to its business with camping models. Later in the year, Volkswagen will also present the next-generation California based on the latest Multivan.

Autonomous Driving Strategy

A key focus in 2023 will be implementing the brand’s ‘autonomous driving’ strategy. Following Volkswagen’s decision to discontinue investment in ARGO AI for the development of autonomous driving, it will be taking forward its original plans with a new partner, introducing a new self-driving system in the first half of the year.

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is the lead brand for autonomous driving in the Volkswagen Group, assuming responsibility for developing the MaaS (Mobility as a Service) and TaaS (Transport as a Service) business areas. In 2023, Volkswagen will conduct extensive driving tests in Munich with its new partner, while the first test customers will try out its MOIA autonomous mobility services in Hamburg.
