Production of electric vans will start in Luton in 2025, as Stellantis confirms it will build fully electric versions of its Vauxhall Vivaro Electric and sister vehicles from Citroen, Fiat and Peugeot at its Bedfordshire factory.
The plant at Luton will join the manufacturing behemoth’s facility at Ellesmere Port — the UK’s first electric-only volume manufacturing plant — that builds the firm’s range of compact electric vans.
Limited production of the group’s all-electric medium vans will get underway in Spring next year, producing the fully electric Citroen e-Dispatch, Fiat E-Scudo, Peugeot E-Expert and Vauxhall Vivaro Electric, as well as the Opel branded version of the latter for European markets.
Production of the existing diesel-powered vans will continue alongside the electric models.
“Following the transformation of our Ellesmere Port facility to produce all-electric compact vans, I’m pleased to announce that we will commence limited production of our medium electric van in Luton from next year, when the first customer vehicles will roll off the production line,” explained Mark Noble, Luton plant director and Stellantis UK manufacturing lead. “This is a fitting way to mark Luton’s 120th anniversary.”
Maria Grazia Davino, group managing director for Stellantis UK, added: “Whilst this decision demonstrates Stellantis’ confidence in the plant, this first step in its re-development towards a fully electric future requires the UK Government to stimulate more demand in the electric vehicle market and support manufacturers that invest in the UK for a sustainable transition.”
Since its opening in 1905, the Luton plant has been producing Vauxhall vehicles for over a century, with commercial vehicle assembly starting with the ‘VYC’ and ‘VXC’ panel vans in 1932. Over the years, Luton has manufactured various Vauxhall commercial vehicles, most recently the Vivaro, which started production in 2001 and has recently undergone significant upgrades.
Stellantis was Europe’s top van maker in 2023, holding 30.4% of the market when combining its registrations across the Citroen, Fiat, Peugeot and Vauxhall brands. It also topped the European electric van market with a 38.8% share. Stellantis led the electric van market in the UK with a 47.9% share, with the Vivaro Electric being the best-selling electric van.
