Volkswagen has revealed pricing and specification details for its new Amarok pickup. The second-generation model will be available in popular double-cab form only, with three engines and two gearbox options.

The Amarok Life is fitted with a 170hp 2.0-litre diesel engine and a six-speed manual gearbox. Priced at £34,055 plus VAT, it’s the entry point to the Amarok range. Switching to a 10-speed automatic gearbox brings a 35hp increase in power at the same time, with a price increase of £1,300 to £35,355.

Despite being the base model, it’s still well equipped, with a 10.0-inch infotainment screen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, air conditioning, parking sensors all around, a reversing camera, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking and lane-keeping assistance. The interior trim is suitable for working life, with fabric seats and a vinyl floor covering.

Stepping up to the Style trim level adds dual-zone climate control, an electrically adjustable driver’s seat, 12.0-inch infotainment centre LED matrix headlights, a 360-degree camera, with a carpet-covered cabin and microfiber trimmed seats. Available only with a 10-speed automatic gearbox, buyers can pick between the 205hp 2.0-litre diesel or the more powerful V6-powered model, with its 3.0-litre engine producing 240hp. Prices are set at £42,505 or £45,005 plus VAT, respectively.

Two models sit at the top of the Volkswagen Amarok range. The PanAmericana is the off-road-focussed option powered by the same 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine, providing 240hp through the four-wheel drive system with lockable rear diff. Buyers will spend £47,255 plus VAT for leather upholstery, an electrically adjustable passenger seat, a Harmon-Kardon sound system with seven speakers and a subwoofer and refined comfort suspension. Cosmetic changes include black 18-inch alloy wheels, sports bar and side steps, with silver roof rails and an ‘X’ design on the front of the pickup.

Finally, the Amarok Aventura is also powered by the 3.0-litre V6 engine with the same 10-speed automatic gearbox. The high-specification lifestyle model tops the range, priced at £48,055 plus VAT. The cabin gets plusher leather-trimmed seats and a heated steering wheel, while the exterior is enhanced with 21-inch alloy wheels, chrome plated mirrors and door handles, and silver roof rails. The X-themed grille is highlighted with a crisp silver finish. Commercial users will be disappointed to find that the payload limit of the Aventura model falls below a tonne, at 877kg, making reclaiming VAT a more difficult task.

All new Amaroks will also come with Volkswagen’s ‘5+ Promise’, which gives customers five annual services, three MOTs, a five-year warranty and five years of roadside assistance.

Payload and Towing

Commercial users are likely to steer clear of the Aventura model, as its payload limit is set at 877kg, or 842kg, when fitted with the towing pack. The highest payload is found with the entry-level Life model, with a limit of 1,113kg, although all but the Aventura edge over a tonne. However, some are perilously close to the limit and will drop under with the fitment of a canopy.

Except for the 170hp Life model, which can tow 3,420kg, every Amarok can tow 3.5 tonnes. Most models have a gross train weight of 6,500kg, meaning that there are no models able to legally pull the maximum weight while carrying the maximum payload.

The roof rails can cope with a static load of up to 350kg, although this drops to 85kg when driving.
