Buying a new pickup truck is set to become a much harder choice from 2019, with a whole host of new vehicles joining the UK market in 2019 and 2020. In this article, we look at the new pickups that are set to hit UK showrooms in the coming years. 

SsangYong kicks us off with the new pickup truck launches in 2018 with the all-new Musso, followed shortly by the Mercedes-Benz X-Class V6. Next year, 2019, is also set to be a big year, with the new Ford Ranger and LDV T60.

Ford Ranger 2022 (Confirmed)

The first glimpses of the 2022 Ford Ranger have supposedly been leaked by Australian car magazine, Wheels. The Ford Ranger 2022 is currently being developed by Ford of Australia and will also be sold as a Volkswagen Amarok.

Great Wall P-Series 2021 (Speculation)

Until Euro-6 kicked in in 2016, Great Wall was a minor player in the UK pickup market with the Steed but the high levels of nitrogen oxide that it emitted meant it had to be pulled from sale. However, the manufacturer was out in full force at Auto Shanghai with no fewer than three pickups on its stand, including the P-Series, which might be hitting the UK with International Motors, who still hold distribution rights for our market.

Isuzu D-Max 2021 (Confirmed)

Isuzu will be launching the next-generation D-Max in 2020, a company official in Thailand has confirmed to us. The 2020 Isuzu D-Max will be developed in conjunction with Mazda, and has been recently spied testing in northern Europe.

Jeep Scrambler 2020 (Speculation)

The upcoming Jeep Scrambler pickup could soon be on sale in the UK, according to Jeep UK boss Damien Dally. The Jeep Scrambler is a pickup truck variant of the next-generation Wrangler, which is due to go on sale in America in 2018.

Land Rover Defender Pickup 2019 (Specualtion)

After a three year absence from the market, Land Rover has confirmed an all-new Defender for 2019. Although the new model is swaying more towards mainstream volume customers, VAT-deductible commercial variants – like a pickup truck and two-seater van – are still expected to make up a huge proportion of sales.

Land Rover Discovery Commercial 2019 (Confirmed)

Although technically not a pickup truck, the Land Rover Discovery Commercial is VAT-deductible and a capable off-roader which makes it appealable to many pickup truck operators. Land Rover withdrew the Discovery Commercial from sale a couple of years ago but launched a new model in the summer of 2018.

LDV T60 2019 (Confirmed)

Ireland’s Harris Group has announced that it will be importing the LDV T60 pickup truck into the UK from 2019. The announcement of the Chinese-built LDV T60 comes less than a year after the brand’s UK relaunch, and shows its commitment to the UK LCV industry.

Mazda BT-50 2021 (Speculation)

Mazda could be bringing the Mazda BT-50 pickup truck back to the UK, following an announcement that the next-generation model will be based on the Isuzu-Max. The new model is expected to be launched in 2021, ten years after the previous generation was taken off-sale in the UK.

It’s expected that next-generation Isuzu D-Max will be arriving in 2020, with Mazda-badged models expected shortly afterwards.

Mercedes-Benz X-Class V6 2018 (Confirmed)

Mercedes-Benz entered the world of pickup trucks in 2017, with the launch of the X-Class. X220 and X250 models, which are powered by Nissan’s 2.3-litre engine, were launched in 2017, while the V6 X350 – which produces 255bhp and 550Nm – joined the market in late 2018.

Mitsubishi L200 2019 (Confirmed)

The Mitsubishi L200 has been updated for the 2019 model year, which consists of new body panels all-round, including a completely redesigned front end, new safety and comfort features, a new transmission and slight alterations to the chassis. We were at the global premiere of the Mitsubishi L200 2019 in Thailand, where we got to put it through its paces.

Mitsubishi Shogun Sport Commercial 2019 (Confirmed)

As with the Discovery Commercial, the Shogun Sport Commercial is a great alternative for pickup truck buyers with its highly-respected Super Select 4WD system and that all-important ‘light commercial’ designation for reclaiming VAT. The vehicle, which is based on the L200, is expected to hit Mitsubishi dealerships in September 2018.

Nissan Navara 2019 (Confirmed)

The updated Nissan Navara 2019 will be arriving at UK dealerships in time for September 2019 registrations, a senior European company official has disclosed to Professional Pickup & 4×4. The alterations consist of a new front end, interior upgrade and a host of new technologies.

Peugeot pickup truck 2020 (Confirmed)

ChangAn, the Chinese manufacturer with whom PSA (Peugeot and Citroen) is developing a pickup, has revealed prototype images of its next-generation model, the Kaicene F70. The Peugeot pickup truck is currently being developed and is due to hit European showrooms in 2021.

Renault Alaskan 2019 (Speculation)

Like Daimler, Renault is another manufacturer that is seeking the expertise of its alliance partner, Nissan, to develop its first full-size European pickup. Based on the Nissan Navara, the Renault Alaskan will be the third pickup to be built at Nissan’s Barcelona plant alongside its Nissan and Mercedes-badged siblings.

Originally supposed to have been launched in September 2017, Renault maintains that it’s still a matter of when, and not if, the Alaskan is launched in the UK.

SsangYong Musso 2018 (Confirmed)

The 2018 SsangYong Musso will be based on a new frame, offered in two wheelbases, have a 3.5t towing capacity and, as a sign of management’s confidence in the product, SsangYong has even hinted at a possible US launch. The SsangYong Musso is revitalising its pickup offering thanks to a huge cash injection from its new Indian owners, Mahindra & Mahindra.

Toyota Land Cruiser Commercial 2018 (Confirmed)

Commercial variants of the Toyota Land Cruiser are about to go on sale once again, after a five year absence from the market. The Land Cruiser is tough and strong, and the new model features the newly-developed 2.8-litre Toyota GD engine, which is capable of producing up to 177hp and 450Nm.

Volkswagen Amarok 2022 (Confirmed)

Ford of Australia has announced that it will be developing the next-generation Volkswagen Amarok, due for launch in 2022 or 2023. Professional Pickup & 4×4 spoke to Ford bosses about the new pickup at the Raptor launch in Morocco (May 2019), who confirmed the Volkswagen Amarok 2022 is still around three years from the production stage.
