The fifth generation of the Land Rover Discovery Commercial joined the market in 2018, a couple of years after the demise of the last generation. Sales of 4×4 commercials have slumped since the British company withdrew the Defender from sale in 2016, but it’s hoped this new launch could liven the segment which is currently dominated by the Mitsubishi Shogun.

Fourteen years on from its debut, Ford’s veteran 3.0-litre ‘AJD’ V6 diesel (258hp/600Nm) is still available on the Discovery Commercial but it has been joined by JLR’s own 2.0-litre ‘Ingenium’ SD4 engine offering 240hp and 500Nm of torque.

While both are remarkably smooth and quiet, the larger 3.0-litre provides the extra poke to overtake or get up to motorway speeds that bit faster. Both engines are hooked to ZF’s seamless and responsive eight-speed automatic transmission and come with four-wheel drive and a twin-speed transfer box as standard.

Measuring 1,635mm long, 939mm high and 1,411mm wide, the Land Rover Discovery Commercial offers 1,856 litres (1.8 cubic metres) of load volume. The load area can be accessed via the two side doors or the large (1,000mm by 735mm) powered tailgate.

Payloads are exceptionally high for the segment; some versions are able to carry more than 900kg. The gross train weight is rated at 6,670kg, meaning 3.5t trailers can be towed while carrying the full payload. 

There is a black, hard-wearing plastic floor with grooves and lashing points to prevent items from sliding around, a full-height bulkhead (solid bottom and mesh at the top) and blacked-out windows for better security. There are plenty of storage compartments under the load bed and behind the bulkhead, and higher-spec models have automatic tailgate openers and towbar activators.

Entry-level ‘S’ models come with 19-inch alloy wheels, 12-way adjustable seats, leather steering wheel, air-conditioning and a variety of safety systems including autonomous braking, lane departure warning, cruise control and speed limiter.

Land Rover’s InControl Touch infotainment is also standard across the range, which uses gestures like touch, swipe and pinch-to-zoom to intuitively control media and settings. It comes with an 8.0-inch display, DAB radio, voice recognition, Bluetooth and smartphone mirror-linking.

Moving up to the mid-range SE, customers also receive satellite navigation, LED headlights, heated seats, folding mirrors, front and rear parking sensors, a 250kW sound system, dual-zone climate control, ambient interior lighting and Pro Services and WiFi Hotspot.

Flagship HSE models get a huge boost in spec, including 20-inch alloy wheels, fog lights, leather seats, keyless entry and start, blind spot monitor, reversing camera, adaptive speed limiter and a 380kW Meridian sound system.

Priced from £40,628 plus VAT, the Discovery Commercial is by far the most expensive – but most luxurious – vehicle in its class. Service intervals are set at 21,000 miles or two years, and there is a three year, unlimited mileage warranty.
