Tesco has taken delivery of an all-electric Iveco eDaily van, the first of 150 twin-battery models that will be joining the supermarket’s home delivery fleet in 2024.
Stationed at Horwich, Tesco’s first eDaily enables deliveries to customers with zero tailpipe emissions thanks to the van’s innovative modular battery setup. The eDaily’s electric motor provides 190hp and 400Nm of torque, making it more than capable of shifting groceries from store to home.
The twin battery setup gives the eDaily a total of 74kWh of energy, which is good for a range of up to 146 miles, according to WLTP testing. Capable of charging at a rate of 80kW, the van can add 62 miles of range when plugged in for just half an hour — something that’s easy with Tesco having chargers at more than 600 of its stores.
Conversion of the Iveco eDaily is made easier with a 15kW e-PTO onboard to power the refrigerated Solomon Commercials body. A second 12-volt e-PTO provides low-voltage power for additional cooling from the GAH Transport Refrigeration fridge, all powered by the eDaily’s drive battery.
Tesco is also utilising the eDaily’s connectivity features to control the vehicle’s driving modes, remotely selecting the best for optimised performance and efficiency.
“The delivery of the Iveco eDaily electric home delivery van to our Horwich store is an exciting step as we move towards a fully electric fleet across the UK by 2030,” explains Rob Smallwood, Tesco’s fleet manager. “The extended range the eDaily offers will enable us to reach more customers in a single trip at our bigger catchments stores, and help us reach our commitment to be carbon neutral in our own operations by 2035.”

In addition to the Total Cost of Ownership benefits eDaily affords, this fleet will also dramatically reduce delivery emissions.
The move continues Tesco’s switch to an electric home delivery fleet. In August 2023, the Sheffield Extra store took delivery of the supermarket’s 500th electric van, a Maxus eDeliver 9.
