BYD has unveiled its first light commercial vehicle for Europe, the pure-electric E-Vali, at the IAA Transportation show in Hanover. Designed specifically for the European market, the E-Vali targets urban delivery and tradespeople, promising practicality, efficiency, and a modern electric drivetrain.
“BYD’s goal of cooling the earth by one degree is a vision that can only be achieved through a wide variety of applications,” explained Michael Shu, Managing Director of BYD Europe. “We’re delighted to show another part of this here at IAA, with a line-up of commercial vehicles, including new models that are tailored to Europe. We’re optimistic that the E-VALI and EYT 2.0 [an electric 75-tonne GCW yard tractor] can make significant contributions to more sustainable solutions in areas as diverse as last-mile deliveries and major distribution hubs.”
The E-Vali will go head to head with large electric vans like the Ford E-Trasnit, the new Renault Master E-Tech and the Vauxhall Movano Electric. Its purpose-built design, with no compromises required to convert a van from diesel power to electric, could give the BYD some significant advantages for efficiency and dynamics, but we’ll have to wait until the van arrives in Europe to find out.
Electric Drivetrain and Range
The E-Vali features BYD’s proprietary Blade Battery technology, which is known for its durability and safety. The cobalt-free 80.64 kWh Lithium Iron-Phosphate (LFP) battery provides a range of 136 to 155 miles under WLTP testing, catering to typical daily delivery routes. Charging is quick and convenient, with the ability to fast-charge from 10-80% in around 30 minutes using DC power. The van also supports V2L (vehicle-to-load) functionality, allowing its battery to power external devices.
Two drivetrain options are available: rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. The rear-mounted motor provides 150kW (204hp), with all-wheel drive models gaining a second front-mounted motor generating 100kW (136hp) – enough for top speeds of 56 or 75mph, depending on the configuration. A compact 6-in-1 electric powertrain integrates key components for streamlined maintenance, efficient energy use, and maximised cargo space.
Payload and Cargo Features
The E-Vali is available in two gross vehicle weights, 3.5 and 4.25 tonnes, and two body lengths: a 6m long L3 and a 7m long L4 variant. The largest model offers a payload capacity of up to 1,450kg and a spacious cargo volume of 17.9 cubic meters, while the lower GVW model limits payload to 700kg. The shorter van has a cargo volume of 13.9m3. A sliding side door and wide rear doors facilitate loading and unloading, while the cargo floor’s low height reduces physical strain. A bulkhead separates the driver’s cabin from the cargo area for added safety.
Interior and Driver Comfort
The cabin is designed with practicality and driver comfort in mind, says BYD. Electrically adjustable seats and a multifunction steering wheel are standard, along with a high-tech instrument panel and a large touchscreen that supports Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and over-the-air updates. Storage solutions include a foldable table, a cool box, and multiple USB charging ports. The spacious interior allows drivers to stand upright when accessing the cargo area, enhancing usability during busy workdays.
BYD E-Vali: Pricing and Availability
BYD has yet to talk about pricing for the E-Vali, but expect the van to arrive in Europe and the UK in 2025, priced competitively with the Ford E-Transit.
