GWM is preparing to fire a fresh shot into the UK pickup segment with the launch of its Cannon pickup truck, expected to land on British shores in September 2025, almost 10 years since its Steed model left the country.

Already a known quantity in Australia, where it has carved out a niche for itself as a value-packed double-cab model, the GWM Cannon will enter the UK with few changes expected from the current Australian-market models. Available in some countries under the name Poer or P Series, the Cannon’s blend of rugged capability, car-like comfort, and aggressive pricing has made it a growing force down under (outselling the Nissan Navara in June), with the UK-bound revised model just launching in the territory.

GWM Cannon: What to expect

At the heart of the Cannon is a choice between a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine delivering 163hp and 400Nm of torque through an eight-speed gearbox, or a 2.4-litre unit generating 184hp and 480Nm of torque, mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission. It’s not yet known which engine GWM will offer in the UK, but expect all models to provide a 3.5-tonne braked towing capacity and a payload reaching the crucial one-tonne mark.

Across the Australian range, the Cannon offers several trim levels, including Premium, Lux and Ultra, all with an extensive kit list. Features such as 18-inch alloys, a sports bar, side steps, a rear differential lock, a 12.3-inch infotainment screen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, wireless phone charging, active cruise control, climate control, and automatic LED headlights are standard on all models.

With comprehensive specifications, GWM is likely to position the Cannon as a high-value alternative to established brands.

Plug-in power?

GWM also produces a larger version, the Cannon Alpha, with a plug-in hybrid powertrain. Although not confirmed for the UK, the Alpha PHEV represents a solid rival to the Ford Ranger PHEV, recently taking a CarExpert Choice Award against the blue oval’s new model.

Using a 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine and a 37.1kWh battery, the Alpha PHEV produces an impressive 408hp and 750Nm, with over 70 miles of EV-only range. It still tows 3.5 tonnes, has proper 4×4 credentials with low-range gearing and diff locks, and includes DC fast charging, making it far more than a token gesture at electrification.

GWM Cannon: Pricing and availability

Official details for the UK market are still under wraps, but GWM sources indicate a September 2025 launch. Expect GWM Cannon models to loosely echo the Australian lineup in both styling and equipment, with likely tweaks for local type approval and tax compliance.

The Cannon undercuts the Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux by around 15% in Australia, which would see a potential starting price in the UK of less than £30,000 if GWM adopts a similar pricing strategy. Full pricing information is expected to be revealed in August.
