We were fans of the last full-size Fiat pickup, the Mitsubishi L200-based Fullback, saying that the Fiat “offers better value” and that it was “our choice” when we pitched it against its donor vehicle in a head-to-head test. Now Fiat is having another go, with the Titano pickup, but we won’t see it in the UK.
It’s not going to be based on the latest incarnation of the Mitsubishi L200, though, as Fiat’s new parents, the Steallantis behemoth, already have a suitable donor vehicle in its stable. Also used as the base for the Peugeot Landtrek, the Changan Kaicene F70 underpins the new Titano, which is destined for South American and African markets.
Fiat promises that the Titano “redefines the driving experience”, guaranteeing refinement alongside great off-road capability. It’s got a robust design that, at first glance, appears to be identical to the Peugeot Landtrek, albeit with a different logo on the grille. We’ve not seen the interior, but expect the two to be indistinguishable.
The pickup measures 5,390mm long, putting it in the same sector as the Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger. Like its European rivals, it’s inbuilt on a ladder frame chassis, with leaf springs at the rear, selectable all-wheel drive, and a payload limit of more than a tonne.
Power comes from a 1.9-litre diesel engine, developing 150hp and 350Nm of torque. A six-speed manual transmission will be fitted as standard, with a six-speed auto available to buyers as an option. We understand that a 2.2-litre engine with an output of 204hp will also be available.
The Titano joins a popular lineup of Fiat pickups, with the compact Toro (closely related to the Fiat 500X hatchback) and supermini-sized Fiat Strada.
