Despite competition from strong rivals and ahead of its first customer deliveries, the Volkswagen ID Buzz Cargo has won the International Van of the Year 2023 award.

Carsten Intra, chief executive officer of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, accepted the prestigious award from Jarlath Sweeney, the chairman of the IVOTY, at the VDA Stars Of The Year event. Sweeney represented the decision of the 34 international commercial vehicle journalists who make up the IVOTY jury.

“We are honoured and proud to receive this award for the ID Buzz Cargo,” commented Intra. “A huge thank you to the IVOTY jury and to everyone at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles who contributed to making the ID Buzz Cargo the best van in its class.”

Volkswagen has developed the ID Buzz Cargo award winner to be driven exclusively by battery-electric power, with no diesel or petrol versions available. UK customers can order a van with a 77kWh battery pack and a 201hp electric motor, capable of achieving a range of 256 miles under WLTP testing.

The lithium-ion battery pack is located deep down in the chassis, in a sandwich floor. Its positioning, and that of the electric drive system, give good weight distribution and a low centre of gravity. Both factors help improve handling and agility while also maximising the cargo area.
