The Czech Army will soon see its ageing fleet of Soviet-made UAZ 469s replaced by the thoroughly modern Toyota Hilux pickup truck.

The Czech Ministry of Defence will take delivery of 1,200 of the modified pickups over the next four years, in a deal worth an estimated €40 million (£36 million). Supplied by Czech firm Glomex Military Supplies, the firm has previously supplied specially modified Ford Ranger XLTs to the Polish army.

The army Hilux will be built around the latest facelifted model of the Toyota Hilux, with all the mechanical updates we’ll see on UK cars next month. Each will be a double-cab valiant, able to accommodate up to five soldiers. However, the military versions will continue to use the 2.4-litre diesel engine that produces 150hp, rather than the more modern 2.8-litre, 205hp, unit going into top-spec versions of the updated model.
