The Mercedes-Benz X-Class has taken its first-ever accolade in the UK, winning the 2018 Professional Pickup & 4×4 Pickup Truck of the Year award.

After undergoing stringent testing, the 12-strong judging panel concluded that the X-Class had the best combination of working and lifestyle elements.

Judging took place in December at the Carlton Towers Estate in Yorkshire, with the judging panel consisting of 12 pickup owners who use their vehicles as part of their daily lives. The judging panel had a wide variation of professions, including farming, fencing, plant hire, builders, road gritters, estate managers, agricultural supplies and a professional hunter.

“The Mercedes-Benz X-Class ticked all the boxes when it came to the juries’ requirements,” remarked Liam Campbell, founder and editor of Professional Pickup & 4×4 magazine.

“From a lifestyle perspective, it was deemed the most comfortable, refined and the best furnished out of all the contenders, but also from a working aspect, the X-Class has a 3.5-tonne towing capacity, a respectable four-wheel-drive system, and it’s backed by Mercedes-Benz’s reputable commercial vehicle dealer network.”

The Mercedes-Benz X-Class has been developed in conjunction with alliance partners Nissan, and is powered by a 2.3-litre engine with a choice of two power ratings; 163hp/403Nm (X220) and 190hp/450Nm (X250). In September, a 3.0-litre V6 (X350) – which also features in the G Wagon – will also be offered, producing 258hp/550Nm.

“We are delighted that the game-changing X-Class has won its first UK award so soon after launching,” explained Steve Bridge, managing director, Mercedes-Benz Vans UK Ltd. “The feedback from customers and those who have tested the vehicle has been outstanding and we are pleased to be raising the bar in this ever-growing sector with the first truly premium pickup.”

Prices start from a fairly hefty £27,100 plus VAT and extend up to £34,500 plus VAT, making it the most expensive pickup truck on sale in the UK.
