The next-generation Mercedes-Benz eSprinter will be available with a 113kWh battery pack, giving the pure-electric van enough power to cover 248 miles on a single charge, and challenging the Ford e-Transit for best-in-class performance. It’s set to reinforce the manufacturer’s commitment to ‘Lead in Electric Drive’, promising increased efficiency, range, and loading capabilities.

As a mark of the vehicle’s importance, Mercedes has invested around €350 million (£310m) in the new eSprinter, with approximately €50 million (£44.3m) allocated to each of its three production facilities in Charleston, Düsseldorf, and Ludwigsfelde.

According to Mathias Geisen, head of Mercedes-Benz Vans, the updated eSprinter “consistently follows our strategy — to be the leader in electric mobility with the most desirable vans while achieving profitable growth worldwide.”

Mercedes-Benz eSprinter: Battery Range and Charging

Initially available with a 113kWh battery pack, the eSprinter will offer a range of up to 248 miles based on WLTP testing simulations. Stick to the city, and the official figures see that range rising to 310 miles — more than enough for a full day’s work in urban areas and enough for many to get through a five-day working week.

Customers will ultimately be able to choose between three different batteries for the eSprinter, matching their requirements to usable capacity. As well as the 113kWh battery, the van will also have lower power 81 and 56kWh choices.

As well as charging from a home or depot charging point at rates as high as 11kW, the new eSprinter can be charged at up to 115kW when connected to a suitable rapid charger. At peak rates, this would allow a user to charge the van from 10 to 80% charge in around 42 minutes for the largest battery option.

Mercedes-Benz eSprinter: Electric Drivetrain

The Mercedes eSprinter is designed using three modules, with the front and rear modules shared across every model, and only the battery capacity in the middle changing.

The front section holds all the tech that makes the van work; an integrated high-voltage battery is housed in the underbody of the front module between the axles to save space and create a low centre of gravity.

At the back is an electrically driven rear axle and a powerful permanent magnet synchronous (PSM) electric motor, making the new eSprinter a rear-wheel drive van, unlike the previous generation. Weighing only 130kg, the motor is available in two power levels — 136hp or a higher power 204hp unit, each producing 400Nm of torque.

Mercedes-Benz eSprinter: High-Tech Cabin

A heavily revised cabin now features the MBUX infotainment system borrowed from the Mercedes car range. This brings voice control, and navigation with ‘Electric Intelligence’ software that helps manage your EV experience — it’ll accurately calculate the range remaining, taking into account traffic and terrain, and organise a route to get you to your destination as quickly as possible, including chagrin, or to arrive with a desired level of charge remaining.

Mercedes-Benz eSprinter: Payload and Towing

The compact electric motor driving the rear axle makes cab chassis variants possible in addition to the classic panel van. This brings advantages with regard to conversions and superstructures, with multiple vehicle lengths available.

Dimensions and payloads for the panel van have yet to be detailed, but the gross vehicle weight will rise as high as 4.25 tonnes, with a towing limit of up to two tonnes.

Mercedes-Benz eSprinter: Pricing and Availability

The eSprinter is slated for launch in the United States and Canada in the latter half of 2023, initially offering a long-wheelbase panel van featuring a high roof. This version will be equipped with the largest available battery, boasting a usable capacity of 113kWh, a loading capacity of 14m3, and a gross vehicle weight of up to 4.25 tonnes.

It will then make its way to Europe and the UK towards the end of the year, with other versions available in 2024.
