Maxus LDV T70 Pickup: Everything We Know • Professional Pickup

The T70 is the upcoming pickup truck from LDV, which will be imported into the UK from late 2020 by the Dublin-based Harris Group.

The successor to the LDV T60 which we tested extensively earlier this year, the T70 features a brand-new 2.0-litre engine and a host of new technology and driver-assist systems.

Maxus LDV T70: Exterior Design

While the new range of LDV vans employs a modern, sleek design, the T70 is rather boxy, making it look slightly dated before it’s even been launched. However, we do like the Ford Ranger-esque LED lights, which have been integrated into the large, octagonal grille.

In markets where the LDV brand name is used (which includes the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand), the Maxus branding will be removed from the grille and replaced with an LDV badge. Parent company SAIC has suggested that the LDV name may also be replaced in these countries in time, too.

Maxus LDV T70: Cab and Interior

Again, the interior isn’t exactly cutting-edge when it comes to design but it’s functional, practical and far from unpleasant. There is a wide range of technology like an 8.0-inch touchscreen display, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, voice recognition and an all-around monitor. Furthermore, this is the first LDV vehicle to feature electronic power steering.

Maxus LDV T70: Engine and Driveline

Unlike the T60 which was powered by VM Motori’s 2.8-litre engine, the T70 employs a new 2.0-litre unit. We criticised the 2.8 for being loud and agricultural but foam and rubber-moulded casings have been fitted around the new block to dramatically reduce engine noise.

There are two power ratings offered; a single turbo version providing 161hp of power and 375Nm of torque, and a twin-turbo producing 215hp and 480Nm. There is a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic to choose from, as well as the option of two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive.

Maxus LDV T70: Payload and Towing

Measuring 1,525mm long, 1,510mm wide and 530mm deep, the load bed is above average for the double-cab pickup segment. UK specifications haven’t been announced yet but, it’s expected that the T70 will feature a one-tonne payload and a three-tonne towing capacity.

SAIC has stated that the LDV T70 will be ‘competitively priced’ which we interpret to mean a starting point of around £18,000 plus VAT for the standard double-cab version with the single turbo engine and manual transmission. Peace of mind will come in the form of LDV’s excellent five-year, 125,000-mile warranty.
