KGM has entered into a technical cooperation agreement with Phinia Delphi France SAS to develop hydrogen-powered internal combustion engines. The collaboration, formalised at KGM’s research and development centre in Pyeongtaek, brings together expertise from both companies to advance hydrogen engine technology.

The partnership aligns with South Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE) national project to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote low-carbon technologies. Hydrogen engines are a key focus of this initiative, supporting the country’s transition to cleaner energy sources.

As part of the MOTIE project, KGM — previously known as SsangYong — is developing a 2.0-litre diesel-based hydrogen engine. The engine will operate on either pure hydrogen or diesel fuel, providing flexibility based on fuel availability. Hydrogen combustion lowers nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions while offering a driving range of over 300 miles. The engine is intended for both industrial and vehicular applications, reflecting a broader push towards hydrogen as a viable alternative fuel.

Giving users the option of fuelling their vehicle with either diesel or hydrogen would help mitigate supply limitations, as hydrogen fuelling stations are few and far between across Europe.

KGM and Phinia to build next-gen powertrains

Phinia, a global supplier of hydrogen and diesel engine components, will contribute its expertise in fuel injection technology. The company’s engine management systems, injectors, and pumps will be integrated with KGM’s in-house diesel engine technology to refine the hydrogen powertrain.

The development roadmap includes designing a multi-purpose hydrogen engine, optimising vehicle performance, and establishing an Extended Range Electric Vehicle foundation. Further research will focus on enhancing the engine’s efficiency and exploring potential applications beyond automotive use.

A KGM representative noted that hydrogen engines have potential beyond passenger vehicles, with possible construction and industrial machinery applications, adding, “Eco-friendly hydrogen engines are a crucial next-generation powertrain technology. Leveraging KGM’s unique ICE expertise, we aim to pioneer the alternative fuel market and expand the eco-friendly pickup segment, targeting niche opportunities in the ICE market.”
