Ford has unveiled the Ranger FG-P Light Tactical Vehicle, designed to cater to defence and security operations, complete with stealth mode and the ability to run on jet fuel.
Jet Fuel Powered
You did read that right. Jet fuel. The catalytic converter is removed, the EGR valve is blocked, and a fuel cooler is installed. Recalibration of the engine control unit and some other software updates leave the engine able to cope with a range of fuels, from diesel to F63 or JP8 jet fuel.
Power is delivered to all four wheels with the standard range of engines found in retail vehicles; there’s a 2.0-litre diesel model available in single or bi-turbo variants, with the new 3.0-litre V6 diesel also available, with 250hp and 600Nm of torque. Depending on the model, customers can choose between a six-speed automatic and a more advanced 10-speed SelectShift automatic transmission.
Stealth Mode
The first hybrid Ford Ranger is the FG-P; there’s an electric motor and small battery pack under the rear floor, which can be used to drive through terrain silently. Adaptable to various battery sized, the Ranger FG-P will cover as many as 15 miles on battery power alone.
Designed for surveillance applications, a blackout system cuts all visible light from the vehicle — including dashboard lights — and disables all sound sources, such as the vehicle horn and warning buzzers.
The resulting reduced noise and thermal footprint enable users to penetrate hostile terrain unnoticed.
Built Tough
The rest of the FG-P model looks much like the new Ford Ranger, with the wide grille flanked by C-clamp LED headlights. However, the suspension has been upgraded with twin-tube foam cell dampers front and rear, heavy-duty bushes, and rear leaves in heavy-duty multi-leaf construction. The changes stabilise and level the vehicle, stiffening the suspension system for increased control.
The load box has a moulded plastic bed liner, an integrated side-step, and an enhanced, wider bed.
Price and Availability
The Ranger FG-P is available globally, but Ford doesn’t release pricing for its specialist vehicles. However, it won’t come cheap, so expect to more than double the cost of a regular road-going Ranger. For a quote, contact Ford Global Fleet Sales
