While the current Ford Ranger pickup is still going strong, preparations for the next-generation model continue, which means the Raptor will be the next model to be revealed – and it’s been teased with V6 petrol power.

Building on the 2023 Ford Ranger that was revealed in November 2021, the new Raptor takes the updated style and adds rugged extras to create a pickup truck that blends performance with presence.

V6 Power

The current Ford Ranger Raptor makes do with a 2.0-litre diesel engine producing 213hp which means it’s not particularly quick. It’s not even the quickest Ranger. However, we understand that Ford is considering fitting a 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine in the UK. This is likely to be the same unit that sees service in the Ford Bronco and Explorer in the US, which means there’s the possibility of more than 350hp and likely to be close to 600Nm of torque.

The powerful engine will be widely available for US and Australian customers, but emissions regulations in the UK and Europe mean that supplies here are likely to be limited. However, the V6 engine should fundamentally change the character of the truck, and create a true halo product for the range.

Uprated Chassis

The new Ranger sits on a heavily revised version of the T6 ladder chassis, with the Raptor receiving significant suspension upgrades. At the front, there’ll be a bespoke double wishbone layout, while the rigid rear axle will receive a boost with coil springs and uprated dampers, likely supplied by Fox.

Bold Design

It’s hidden under a lot of camouflage, but the basics of the Ranger Raptor are clear to see; wide front wheel arches, distinctive side panels, boosted rear arches and boldly restyled bumpers front and rear. The Raptor will also receive a unique grille treatment to differentiate it from the regular Ranger models, as well as larger all-terrain tyres.

The interior will remain much the same as the regular Ranger, but expect some extra detailing such as a stitched steering wheel direction guide, unique sports seats and highlights around the cabin.

Pricing and Availability

There’s no word of payloads yet, but the current Raptor fails to meet the one-tonne requirement for commercial use, meaning business users can’t reclaim the VAT element. That’s unlikely to change with this new model, but that’s not held back the Raptor’s popularity in the UK.

With a price tag likely to knock on the door of £60,000, it’s going to be a special kind of customer that will be able to justify a Raptor in their life but evidence suggests that there are plenty of them.

The vehicle will be revealed on 22 February, with sales expected in the latter half of 2023.
