Order books are now open for the Toyota Corolla Commercial, the UK’s first ‘self-charging’ full hybrid van.
The new car-derived van extends the Toyota Professional range of light commercial vehicles further, adding to the Hilux pickup truck, Proace medium van and Proace City compact van.
Toyota Corolla Commercial: Hybrid Power
The Corolla Commercial shares the same powertrain as the car it’s derived from, which means there’s a 1.8-litre petrol engine under the bonnet alongside an electric motor. With a small battery pack, this allows the van to run on petrol power, pure electric power, or a combination of both.
Computers do the heavy lifting of working out what bits should work when, leaving the driver to treat the car as a regular vehicle with an automatic gearbox and concentrate on the road.
Toyota hasn’t released official fuel economy figures yet but expects the van to return between 55.3 and 62.7mpg under WLTP testing, with CO2 emissions measured between 102 and 115g/km.
Experience of the passenger car version suggests that real-world economy should fall in the mid-50 mpg range, depending on conditions and driving style.
Toyota Corolla Commercial: Payload and Towing
While it’s still subject to homologation, Toyota has yet to release details of the Corolla’s maximum payload capacity. However, it’s based on the Touring Sports version of the passenger car, with modifications including removal of the rear seats, the installation of a flat load bay floor, and a full metal bulkhead to protect the driver and passenger.
The load bay is 1,558mm long, 952mm wide and up to 682mm high. The passenger car can accommodate 1,591 litres of cargo in the rear once the seats have been folded down; the Corolla Commercial should exceed this capacity, although perhaps not by much.
While there’s no word on a maximum payload, expect a towing limit of 750kg.
Toyota Corolla Commercial: Pricing and Availability
Available in one single trim level, the Corolla Commercial will be available priced at £22,134 plus VAT. For that price tag, you’ll find many car-like features fitted as standard, including an 8.0-inch infotainment screen with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a reversing camera, automatic headlights, dual-zone air conditioning, heated, height-adjustable seats, adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist.
As with all Toyota models, the Corolla Commercial will come with a three-year comprehensive warranty, but that can then be extended to run for up to 10 years with Toyota Relax
. As part of the Toyota Professional range of LCVs, it also comes with five years’ roadside assistance and the guarantee of a service appointment within seven days.
Order books are open now, with the first customer deliveries of the Toyota Corolla Commercial van expected in June 2022.
