Amazon adds 5,000 Mercedes electric vans to European delivery fleet

Amazon will add nearly 5,000 electric vans from Mercedes to its European delivery network, strengthening an existing partnership between the two companies.

The bulk of the new vans will be Mercedes-Benz eSprinter models, with the remainder made up of eVito panel vans. Around half of the total – more than 2,500 units – will be deployed in Germany, with the rest distributed across four other European countries. The vehicles will be operated by Amazon’s Delivery Service Partners (DSPs).

The rollout represents Mercedes’ largest single order of electric vehicles to date. Amazon estimates that the new vans could be used to deliver more than 200 million parcels per year — or more than half a million packages every day.

The two companies have worked together on electrification since at least 2020, when Amazon integrated more than 1,800 Mercedes eVito and eSprinter vans into its network. Mercedes also signed up to The Climate Pledge, a climate protection initiative founded by Amazon and Global Optimism.

The eVito vans for Amazon are built at Mercedes’ Vitoria plant in Spain. Aimed at urban delivery work, the eVito offers a choice of 60kWh or 90kWh batteries, with driving ranges of up to 298 miles, depending on configuration. Power comes from an electric motor with a peak output of either 116hp (85kW) or 204hp (150kW).

The eSprinter, built at the brand’s Dusseldorf factory, is available in two lengths and with three battery sizes. It offers a maximum range of 300 miles and a load volume of up to 14 cubic metres, with a maximum gross vehicle weight of 4.25 tonnes. All vans delivered to Amazon include custom shelving systems and a partition wall with a sliding door, installed by a certified upfitter to suit parcel delivery work.
