Toyota looks set to introduce the first hybrid-powered pickup as the Hilux receives a fuel-saving 48-volt hybrid technology update.
Combining a small electric motor and a 48-volt battery pack with the existing 2.8-litre diesel engine will see an improvement in economy of around 10% without impacting the off-road and towing capabilities of the Hilux. The system will also improve driveability, enable an improved stop/start system, and improve noise, vibration and harshness.
The small motor will attach to the engine and provide a power boost at low revs, filling in the gap often found before the turbo starts to generate more muscle. It will also work as a starter motor, operating to shut down the diesel power unit when not required before seamlessly restarting it.
Similar systems in other vehicles are compact and lightweight, ensuring that the hybrid Hilux will be able to continue to tow 3.5 tonnes or tackle rugged terrain.
Australian buyers will be first to receive the upgrade, with 2024 SR5 models fitted with the 48-volt technology.
“We are continually striving to reduce the fuel consumption of our vehicles to help reduce on-going costs for customers, as well as helping reduce our environmental impact, and the addition of 48-Volt Technology to our biggest-selling vehicle line will contribute to this,” explained Toyota Australia
vice president of sales, Sean Hanley.
“This new technology will not only improve fuel consumption, but customers will also benefit from enhanced on and off-road performance, making the Hilux even more appealing for a weekend away or longer term excursion into the outback.”
