Tesla has revealed a prototype of its new Robovan — a large-format, electric, fully autonomous vehicle that could be adapted for cargo and goods transport. Unveiled at the company’s We, Robot event in Los Angeles, the Robovan was introduced alongside the Tesla Robotaxi, but its potential role in commercial logistics drew attention from fleet watchers.

The Robovan, roughly the size of a small bus, is built on the same self-driving technology platform as Tesla’s upcoming Robotaxi. It is designed to operate without a steering wheel or pedals and instead relies entirely on Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) system. In its current form, the vehicle features a spacious interior with a flat floor, sliding side door, and storage compartments at both ends, which Tesla says could be repurposed for carrying goods in industries like construction, food service, or urban deliveries.

While the prototype shown was configured for up to 20 seated passengers — with rows of seats facing each other — Tesla CEO Elon Musk confirmed the Robovan’s design is modular and could be used for transporting cargo instead of people.

“This can carry up to 20 people, and it can also transport goods,” Musk said. “The Robovan is what’s going to solve high density.”

No technical specifications have been provided yet. That includes range, battery capacity, payload, or load volume — all critical factors for commercial users. Nor is there a production timeline. Musk suggested 2027 as the earliest time for the production of the smaller Robotaxi, indicating that the Robovan may follow or arrive around the same time. As with all Tesla products still in development, final details may differ significantly from the initial prototype.

The Robovan adopts a distinctive visual approach, which Tesla describes as retro-futuristic or “art deco” design. Its shape takes cues from streamlined trains of the 1920s and 30s, with clean metallic sides, continuous light strips, and a slim, horizontal headlamp across the front. It lacks visible front or rear windows and is topped with roof-length glass panels. The effect is visually striking but may also limit its suitability for conventional commercial applications where visibility, load access, and durability are key.

For now, the Robovan remains a showpiece. No plans were announced regarding production facilities, commercial partners, or use cases beyond Musk’s suggestion that it could bring down travel costs to “5 or 10 cents per mile” for fleet operators. However, autonomous deployment would first require regulatory approval, including in the UK, where the recently passed Automated Vehicles Act provides a legal pathway for fully driverless vehicles if they meet defined safety standards.

Despite the futuristic appearance and emphasis on autonomy, the Robovan’s large format and flexible layout could make it relevant for urban logistics, shared cargo shuttles, or high-volume last-mile delivery operations — assuming it reaches production with the necessary payload capabilities and backend fleet support.

For commercial van operators, the Robovan won’t be a near-term product. But it offers a glimpse into Tesla’s ambitions for electric, driverless transport at scale — and could eventually play a role in reshaping urban delivery and logistics fleets in the next decade.
