After being comprehensively overhauled in 2021, the Renault Trafic panel van has gone from strength to strength, with more than 16,000 registrations in 2023 — its best performance since 2016. Now, the range is completed with the arrival of the Renault Trafic E-Tech, an all-electric version of the popular panel van.
The new Trafic E-Tech echoes the diesel-powered models with its bold design and, says Renault, maintains all of its ICE counterpart’s strengths.
The cabin follows the same design as the regular Trafic, with a horizontal band running the van’s width and housing an 8.0-inch infotainment screen that includes wireless smartphone integration with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
A 7.0-inch digital instrument panel sits in front of the driver, who will be getting comfortable in the height-adjustable driver’s seat with lumbar adjustment and armrest. Renault’s impressive ‘Mobile Office’ is also included, transforming the middle seat into a workspace or lunch spot, with room for a laptop and an A4-sized swivel stand to hold documents.
The cabin also has 88 litres of storage, including 54 litres hidden in an under-bench area.
Standard equipment includes air conditioning, heated electrically adjustable door mirrors, rear parking sensors and cruise control with a speed limiter.
Safety is taken care of by a suite of technology that includes automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, driver attention alert and drowsiness warning.
E-Tech Electric Power
The Trafic E-Tech will be driven by a 120hp electric motor with 245Nm of torque, giving it enough grunt to pull a full load and, when empty, accelerate to 62mph in 8.4 seconds. Keep going, and it’ll top out at 68mph — just about enough to keep up on the motorway.
Power will come from a 52kWh battery pack, which is enough to keep the Trafic running for 186 miles, at least according to official figures.
An adaptive regenerative brake system gathers energy when slowing and transfers that back to the battery pack, recovering lost energy and extending the vehicle’s range.
Rapid chargers can plug into the Trafic E-Tech, refilling the battery at a rate of 50kW, meaning a full charge should take around an hour. A dedicated home or depot charger, which is usually rated at 7.4kW, will provide a complete empty to full charge in around seven hours, leaving the van ready for work each morning.
The battery is backed by a 100,000-mile or eight-year warranty (whichever comes soonest) that guarantees the battery’s performance. Should its state of health fall below 70%, a replacement battery pack will be provided free of charge.
Renault Trafic Payload and Towing
Renault is making the Trafic E-Tech available in three body sizes: a short body (5.08m) and a long body (5.48m), with a low roof (1.97m), or a long wheelbase with a high roof (2.50m). The cargo volume ranges from 5.8m3 to 8.9m3 at the extreme ends of the lineup.
At its maximum, load lengths of up to 4.15 metres can be carried in the back of the Trafic, thanks to a load-through facility that securely extends the cargo area into the passenger footwell.
Without the load-through facility, the cargo area of the Trafic measures 2,537mm long for the short wheelbase model and 2,937mm for the long wheelbase variant. Each has a maximum internal width of 1,662mm and 1,268mm between the wheel arches. The roof height varies from 1,387mm to 1,898mm.
Each model has a gross vehicle weight of 3,070kg and payload limits between 1,083 and 1,222kg. Towing is limited to just 920 kilograms across all models.
Renault Trafic E-Tech Price and Availability
First deliveries of the Renault Trafic E-Tech are expected in September, but customers can pre-order their van now. Prices start at £39,500 plus VAT for the SL30 short-wheelbase low-roof model and rise to £41,240 for the long-wheelbase, high-roof Trafic.
The van is currently eligible for the UK government’s plug-in van grant
, which knocks £5,000 off that asking price.
