Ten years on from the first public sale of the all-electric Kangoo Z.E, Renault has established itself as a world pioneer and European leader in electric vehicles, selling 70,000 of its compact electric van to date. Now, Renault is renewing its all-electric LCV range, starting with the new Kangoo Van E-Tech Electric.
The electric Kangoo draws on the legacy of its diesel-powered predecessor, the same van that won International Van of the Year 2022

Renault Kangoo E-Tech: Electric Powertrain
The Kangoo E-Tech is driven by an electric motor that develops 122hp alongside an impressive 245Nm of torque. Instant power from the all-electric drive train allows for a smooth and stress-free driving experience. Eco mode caps the vehicle’s power output and top speed, helping optimise overall range, although it’s best used when carrying a light load.
Thanks to its 45kWh lithium-ion battery, the Kangoo E-Tech boasts a range of up to 186 miles under WLTP testing. That’s enough for most compact van drivers to cover a day’s work without fear of running out of juice.
Recharging speeds depend on the model. Entry-level models will come with an 11kW onboard charger, while higher specifications benefit from a 22kW unit. As an option, an 8kW DC fast charger is available, boosting recharging speeds dramatically. Topping up a battery from 15% to 80% will take less than six hours on a 7.4kW home charging unit, dropping to just 30 minutes when plugged into a rapid DC charger.
Three driver-selected modes adjust the regenerative braking system, helping improve energy recovery. The free-flowing ‘Sailing’ mode limits the regenerative braking effect, making it suited to high-speed motorway driving. The day-to-day ‘Drive’ mode provides a diesel engine-like level of braking when you lift off the throttle, while the ‘Brake’ mode boosts the regen system to maximise braking performance and energy recovery. Conventional hydraulic braking is always there if more stopping power is needed.
Renault Kangoo E-Tech: Payload and Practicality
The battery has been placed under the floor panel, leaving the van’s cargo capacity unaltered with up to 3.9m3 of storage volume in the short wheelbase L1 version and a payload limit of 600kg. The long wheelbase L2 models extend the load volume to 4.9m3, with an increased 800kg payload capacity.
Other features include the ingenious and unique ‘Open Sesame by Renault’ with the largest side opening on the market at 1.45m, the innovative ‘Easy Inside Rack’ retractable interior gallery, the three front seats with a fold-down centre backrest to create a mobile office, and nearly 60 litres of cab storage compartments including the ‘Renault Easy Life’ drawer.
Renault Kangoo E-Tech: Efficient Cabin Luxury
All of the Kangoo E-Tech’s eco information – including the selected driving mode, electric power management information, and driving aid settings – is displayed across a fully customisable 10.0-inch colour digital instrument panel.
The air conditioning system works with an integrated heat pump, enabling heating in winter and cooling in summer by operating on the principle of reversible air conditioning. The heating supplies the passenger compartment with energy recovered from outside, while the air conditioning extracts energy from the passenger compartment to discharge outside the vehicle.
The heat pump provides optimal performance when the temperature is between -15 and +15°C. In addition to providing first-rate thermal comfort, it preserves vehicle range, reducing energy losses enough to save as much as 52 miles of range.
A heated windscreen, heated front seats, and heated steering wheel are also available as optional extras, providing efficient methods of keeping occupants warm and the cabin comfortable.
Renault Kangoo E-Tech: Pricing and Availability
Production of the Renault Kangoo E-Tech will begin soon, with the first deliveries expected in October 2022. Final pricing has yet to be confirmed, but we expect the range to start from around £30,000 before the plug-in van grant and VAT.
