The Renault Master has been a familiar sight on roads across Europe for more than four decades, with over three million units sold since its launch in 1980. Now entering its fourth generation and available to pre-order, the new Renault Master arrives with a refreshed design, improved aerodynamics, and a wealth of new technology.
For businesses and tradespeople, it promises to carry more and do so more efficiently, whether powered by diesel or electric. The new version also offers a more refined cabin and a host of features to make long workdays behind the wheel easier and more connected.
Unveiled at last month’s Commercial Vehicle Show, the new Renault Master E-Tech slots neatly alongside its smaller siblings, the Trafic E-Tech and Kangoo E-Tech, rounding out Renault’s electrified light commercial vehicle lineup.
Diesel and Electric Power
Renault continues to offer a choice of diesel and electric drivetrains. For those sticking with diesel, the new Master is available with three Blue dCi engine options, producing 130hp, 150hp, or 170hp. These engines have been refined to improve efficiency, with CO2 emissions dropping by around 20% and fuel consumption improving by around 1.5 litres per 100km compared to the previous generation. Buyers can choose between a six-speed manual gearbox or a new nine-speed automatic, the latter promising smoother shifts and increased durability.
The electric E-Tech version is powered by a 105kW (143hp) motor that delivers 300Nm of torque — enough to pull a robust payload capacity of up to 1,625kg and towing up to 2.5 tonnes, depending on specification. Its 87kWh battery provides an impressive WLTP range of up to 285 miles, making it one of the best in class for long-distance capability. Charging options include a 130kW DC fast charge, which adds 142 miles of range in just 30 minutes, and a 22kW AC home charge that takes the battery from 10% to 100% in just under four hours.
Car-Like Interior
The new Master’s interior promises to feel more like a passenger vehicle than a traditional van. A redesigned S-shaped dashboard enhances the sense of space, and premium materials contribute to a modern, high-quality feel. Every version comes with a 10-inch touchscreen as standard, running Renault’s OpenR Link multimedia system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.
Cabin storage is improved, with capcity rising to 135 litres — a 25% increase over the previous model. Clever touches include a fold-down middle seat that doubles as a workstation, complete with a laptop slot and USB-C ports for charging. Renault has even considered practical details, such as non-abrasive TEP-lined seat edges that withstand wear and tear from frequent in-and-out use.
The steering wheel is now adjustable for height and reach, borrowed from Renault’s passenger car lineup. Automatic models have steering wheel-mounted transmission controls, freeing up more space on the centre console. Combined with a quiet cabin, improved sound insulation, and ergonomic seating, the new Master aims to make long hours on the road less taxing.
Payload and Cargo
Cargo capacity remains a key selling point, and Renault has worked to ensure that efficiency doesn’t come at the expense of practicality. The load area has been optimised with a wider side door opening (up by 40mm) and an additional 100mm in length compared to the outgoing model. Depending on the configuration, the van offers up to 14.8m3 of cargo space.
Aerodynamics have played a crucial role in the redesign. The rear of the van is narrower to reduce drag, but the load bay dimensions remain generous, with a wide opening for easy loading. The rear window retains its asymmetrical design while the C-shaped rear lights mirror the front’s light signature.
Pricing and Availability
The new Renault Master is available to pre-order now, with prices starting at £33,500 plus VAT for diesel models, and £42,500 for the E-Tech electric versions in MM35 form, before VAT or the government’s plug-in van grant.
First deliveries are expected before the end of 2024.
