Maxus has unveiled the eTerron 9 at the 2024 IAA Transportation show in Hanover, the first all-electric, all-wheel-drive pickup in Europe’s mid-size segment, going head to head with the diesel-powered Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux, amongst other rivals. With a dual-motor setup, a 102kWh battery, and versatile all-terrain capabilities, the eTerron 9 is positioned to serve both commercial users and lifestyle-oriented buyers.
Power and Performance
The eTerron 9 is powered by two permanent magnet synchronous motors — a 125kW/170hp motor at the front and a rear-mounted 200kw/272hp — generating a combined output of 325kW (442hp). This allows the pickup to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 5.8 seconds, making it the fastest accelerating pickup on sale in the UK. The all-wheel-drive system, combined with an electronic All-Terrain System (ATS), promises traction across various terrains. The ATS promises six driving modes, including mud, sand, and snow, along with over 400 customisable settings for tailored driving experiences.

The 102kWh battery, designed with a Tetris-like compact structure to optimise space and safety, provides a range of up to 267 miles on a single charge, according to WLTP testing. Using a 115kW rapid charger, the battery can be recharged from 20% to 80% in approximately 40 minutes, adding 160 miles of range.
The truck’s nine-channel ventilation thermal management system is designed to improve range by up to 18% during chillier months, hopefully reducing cold weather’s impact on battery efficiency.
Practicality and Comfort
At 5.5 meters in length, the eTerron 9 is longer than the current crop of pickups, measuring as much as 30cm longer than its diesel-powered rivals.
However, despite its beefier dimensions, the payload capacity is limited to 620kg. Falling short of the 1,000 kg threshold needed for classification as a dual-purpose vehicle, company car users may face higher Benefit-in-Kind (BIK) tax rates, similar to those of regular passenger cars. Additionally, commercial buyers may not be able to automatically reclaim VAT
, which could increase overall costs for business users.

While the heavy battery reduces the payload capacity to 620kg, the eTerron 9 will offer a 3.5-tonne towing capacity, matching the best in class. The truck’s multi-link suspension system also promises a comfortable ride, while adjustable ride height improves both loading convenience and off-road performance.
Inside, the Maxus eTerron 9 is equipped with reclining front seats that can fold to create an almost flat 1.7-meter-long sleeping area. The interior also features 20 storage compartments and premium materials, including ventilated leather seats with massage functions. An electronically powered tailgate and extendable loading area further enhance its utility.

Innovative Features
A key feature of the eTerron 9 is its “Vehicle to Load” (V2L) capability, which allows the truck’s battery to power external devices. With 2.2kW outlets in the front trunk (frunk) and the truck bed, as well as a 6.6kW external connection, the vehicle can provide power for tools, appliances, or camping equipment. The 236-litre frunk also offers weatherproof storage.
If the load box proves too limiting for some, the rear wall of the cab can be lowered at the touch of a button. This extends the loading area to a maximum of 2.4 meters — long enough for a surfboard and skis, or construction and gardening supplies.
Adjustable air suspension allows users to lower the eTerron 9. In Easy Load mode, the back of the pickup can drop by 60mm, making loading and unloading easier.

Maxus eTerron 9: Pricing and Availability
The eTerron 9 is expected to enter the UK markets by late 2024. Pricing is anticipated to be significantly higher than the Maxus T90EV, the brand’s current electric pickup, which starts at £49,995 before VAT.
