A survey by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has revealed that a significant portion of the UK’s van-driving workforce is facing mental health challenges tied directly to work demands. The study, which surveyed 1,000 van drivers across the UK, found that nearly a quarter (24%) reported experiencing depression or mental health issues due to job-related stress within the last year.
The Root Causes of Stress for Van Drivers
Van drivers cited long hours and poor work-life balance as key contributors to their mental strain. Over a third (32%) highlighted the challenges of balancing work with personal life, while 28% said the sheer volume of hours worked was a significant factor affecting their mental wellbeing. The pressures of long shifts and increased workloads have become common, with half of the survey participants reporting that they feel overwhelmed by work at least once a month.
Most drivers (60%) reported an increase in their working hours compared to the previous year. Many are now routinely working 10 or more hours daily, and about 10% admitted to working 13 hours or more per day – a significant jump compared to the previous year.
A Call for Greater Awareness During International Stress Awareness Week
In response to these findings and to mark International Stress Awareness Week
, Volkswagen is encouraging van drivers to consider their mental health needs, emphasising the impact of prolonged working hours on mental wellbeing.
The survey also raises questions about adherence to the UK’s legal limit on working hours. Under UK law, workers should generally work no more than 48 hours per week on average, unless they opt out of this cap. However, a substantial number of van drivers are working well beyond these guidelines, adding to the strain on their mental health.
Eve Tyers, Head of Marketing & Communications at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, said: “These findings clearly show the alarming number of van drivers in the UK that are feeling overworked and overwhelmed, as well as the impact this is having on their mental health. We’re therefore encouraging van drivers to prioritise their wellbeing, making sure to take the breaks they need to remain in good physical and mental shape day-to-day.”
