Just when you thought the excitement around the Kia PV5 couldn’t get any more intense, Kia has announced a last-minute boost to its electric van’s WLTP range figures before a single van has even turned a wheel in anger.
Following ongoing WLTP testing, the PV5 Cargo has officially gained up to three more miles in its Standard Range version and an earth-shattering 11 extra miles in Long Range form. That means the PV5 Cargo L2/H1 now offers 184 miles from its 51.5kWh battery (up from 181) or 258 miles with the larger 71.2kWh unit (up from 247).
It’s not quite the sort of leap that’ll change your fleet strategy overnight, but hey, more is more.
Kia does note, however, that the PV5’s revised figures may still be subject to final homologation. Presumably, there’s still time to squeeze out another mile or two before launch.
The PV5 is Kia’s first electric commercial vehicle, arriving later this year in Cargo guise, with crew cab and chassis cab variants to follow.
The PV5 Cargo will start from £27,645 plus VAT, and qualifies for the full £5,000 Plug-in Van Grant. That price gets you the Standard Range van with 122hp and a payload of 790kg. Opting for the Long Range model, priced from £30,145 plus VAT, ups the power to 163hp and the range to 258 miles, but drops payload to 690kg. All launch versions of the PV5 offer 4.4m³ of cargo space.
All models are expected to charge from 10 to 80% in under 30 minutes on a 150kW rapid charger, although Kia is still keeping final charge specs under wraps.
With its size, range and payload, the PV5 straddles the gap between Ford’s E-Transit Custom and the smaller E-Transit Courier, while undercutting the larger van on price.
Whether three extra miles is enough to make the PV5 an even more appealing proposition remains to be seen.
