Iveco has deployed a specially adapted eDaily capable of wireless charging on Italy’s A35 Brebemi motorway, marking a further step in the development of inductive charging for commercial vehicles.

The van supports both static wireless charging and dynamic wireless power transfer (DWPT) — a system that allows vehicles to recharge while driving over specially equipped road infrastructure.

Real-world testing environment

The vehicle has joined the Argentea fleet operated by motorway concessionaire A35 Brebemi, which has been running trials of wireless charging technology for several years at its Arena del Futuro test facility between Brescia and Milan.

Unlike previous prototype demonstrations, the project uses a road-ready production eDaily, adapted with inductive charging hardware to interact with the dedicated infrastructure installed on the test route.

Configured as a 42C Crew Van with six seats, the vehicle will be used by Brebemi personnel for operational duties during the trial period.

Technology moving beyond laboratory trials

Dynamic wireless charging systems remain at an early stage of development, but several international projects are now exploring their potential in real-world environments.

Recent trials have been launched in France and the United States, reflecting growing interest in infrastructure that could allow electric vehicles to recharge while driving, potentially reducing the need for large onboard batteries or frequent stops for plug-in charging.

Marco Aimo-Boot, Vehicle Electrification – T&D Innovation & Advanced Engineering at Iveco Group, said the deployment followed extensive testing of wireless charging systems at the Brebemi site.

“After nearly a year of testing wireless charging in both static and dynamic modes on the equipped ring at the A35 Brebemi Arena del Futuro site, we prepared a new eDaily equipped with the DWPT system,” he said.

“Our goal is to extend static charging functionality to compatible public sites.”

Norberto Codegone, head of LCV product management at Iveco, said testing the technology in real operating conditions was an important step forward.

“Testing DWPT directly on the highway demonstrates how dynamic charging can support daily operational needs while ensuring safety, performance and service continuity for drivers and operators,” he said.

Infrastructure remains the key challenge

While inductive charging offers an attractive long-term concept for electric mobility, its widespread adoption would require significant infrastructure investment to equip roads with embedded charging systems.

For now, this project serves primarily as a technology demonstrator rather than a commercially deployable solution.
