Hot on the heels of the E-Transit, Ford has given us a first look at the future as the new all-electric E-Transit Custom van is revealed.
The second of five all-electric commercial vehicles Ford will reveal by 2024, the E-Transit Custom promises to ‘set a new benchmark in Europe’s one-tonne van segment’ while making it easy for businesses to make the change to electrified vehicles.
Eventually forming the basis of the Volkswagen Transporter, thanks to a significant joint venture between Volkswagen and Ford that will also see the Ranger and Amarok pickup trucks sharing running gear, the E-Transit Custom cuts a distinctive rug amongst the range of ageing rivals. Featuring rebalanced proportions, a confident stance and full LED lighting, the new model might not redefine the one-tonne segment – where it outsells its rivals three to one – but will at least renew it.
The latest addition to the electrified Ford commercial vehicle line-up will play a key part in Ford’s commitment to achieving zero emissions for all Ford vehicle sales in Europe, and carbon neutrality across Europe, by 2035.
Ford is remaining tight-lipped for now, but it’s expected that the E-Transit Custom will be powered by a 67kWh battery pack driving a 180hp electric motor, with Ford targeting a driving range of 236 miles – that’s more than three times the distance the average European fleet driver covers each day. DC fast-charging will ensure that downtime is kept to a minimum when topping up the vehicle’s battery.
As well as retaining full towing capability, among features developed using insights from van users, ProPower Onboard technology will provide exportable power for tools, lights and devices while on site.
Replacing the UK’s best-selling van, the E-Transit Custom is designed to fit seamlessly into the Ford Pro ecosystem of software, management, financing and charging solutions. E-Transit Custom will be supported by Ford Pro via one comprehensive platform to help increase uptime and reduce operating costs, using sophisticated connectivity to enable an always-on relationship.

The E-Transit Custom is the second electric commercial vehicle presented by Ford, with another three to follow by 2024. Next will be the Transit Courier, with Tourneo people-mover versions of Custom and Courier also joining the fray.
Production of the E-Transit Custom will begin in the second half of 2023, with more specific details expected in September 2022. Before then, we’ll finally get to drive the new Ranger pickup, starting with the V6-powered Raptor, as well as the two-tonne E-Transit.
