The Ford Transit Custom is the best-selling vehicle in the UK for the second year running, with the 42,762 vans registered in the last 12 months accounting for more than a third of all commercial vehicles sold.

That total also left it 58 registrations ahead of the Nissan Qashqai, the UK’s best-selling car in 2022.

Competitors have been left trailing in the Transit Custom’s wake, as the medium-sized Ford van sold more than double the number of its nearest competitor, the Vauxhall Vivaro, which saw registrations of just 16,830 vehicles over the same period.

When combined with the passenger-carrying Tourneo Custom, Ford holds a 39.8% share of the segment.

The LCV market suffered a drop in 2022, ending the year down 20.6% thanks to a combination of supply chain constraints, economic shocks and, even now, Covid-related delays around the world. Ford outperformed the market, although it still saw fewer vehicles registered than in 2021. Down by 12.8% overall, the manufacturer still sold 105.913 light vans.

Mike Hawes, SMMT chief executive, commented: “While demand for new vans remained robust throughout 2022, replicating last year’s high levels of fleet renewal was always going to be a challenge with relentless supply chain disruptions and wider economic malaise. A return to growth is expected in 2023, but if this crucial sector is to deliver for the economy, society and the environment, action is needed from all stakeholders, particularly in the areas of charging infrastructure and fiscal frameworks, enabling more van buyers to make the switch.”

Ford isn’t resting on its laurels, introducing the new E-Transit Custom later this year. A partnership product with Volkswagen, the new E-Transit Custom will be a crucial component in Ford’s commitment to reach zero emissions for all Ford vehicle sales in Europe and carbon neutrality across its European footprint by 2035.
