Fiat has unexpectedly announced the replacement of its Doblo vans. Currently built on a Fiat-Chrysler platform, the switch to the new model means it now shares its running gear with the Stellantis trio of vans – the Citroen Berlingo, Peugeot Partner and Vauxhall Combo.

The new Doblo will be the third fully-electric vehicle in Fiat’s product range, continuing its electrification strategy, which will see the Italian brand go fully electric with all new models in Europe by 2024. In the meantime, this fifth-generation van will also be offered with both petrol and diesel engine options.

The Doblo van will be available in the UK in two lengths with two different configurations, Van and Crew Cab. The manufacturer promises that this new generation model has comfort at its core, with attention turned to the professionals who use the vehicles day in, day out, with the aim being to create a stress-free work experience with sound insulation and suspension designed to reduce bumps, noise and vibrations.

Fiat has also installed what it refers to as “Magic Features” in the Doblo, Magic Cargo creates an extra 0.5m3 in cargo volume by using a load-through panel in the bulkhead, which also means loads as long as 3.4m will squeeze in. There is a storage box under the passenger seat too, for smaller or more fragile items. If you need a mobile office, then Fiat has added a rotating tray table to provide some desk space for completing paperwork, rather than balancing a clipboard on your knee.

The rearview Magic Mirror is a 5.0-inch digital mirror providing three different views: a rearview mirror, a complete view of the blind spot area and a rear parking camera, helping to improve visibility and enhance safety.

Fiat E-Doblo: All-Electric

The all-electric model, dubbed E-Doblo, is kitted out with a 136hp electric motor and a 50kWh battery pack which, in ideal WLTP conditions, gives a range of around 173 miles. With a top speed of 80mph and up to 260Nm of torque, it’ll suit urban environments perfectly while still being capable on the open road. Fiat has included a 100kW “Rapid Charge Mode” too, which means that you should be able to charge from a DC charger from empty to 80% battery (or about 138 miles) in around 30 minutes.

The driver can choose between Normal, Eco and Power modes, each of which modifies the vehicle’s driving response to optimise the vehicle performance: Normal is recommended for driving in regular traffic; Eco improves energy efficiency and restricts power, while Power opens the taps and allows access to the vehicle’s peak power.

Continuing the Magic theme, the E-Doblo is also available with a Magic Plug, allowing users to tap into the electricity stored in the battery to power items such as cargo fridges or a workbench for power tools, depending on the conversion.

Alongside the all-electric version, two diesel and one petrol-powered model will be available. The diesel options consist of a 1.5-litre model producing 100hp, mated to a manual gearbox, and a 130hp option available with either a manual or eight-speed automatic transmission. A 1.2-litre petrol engine will also be available, offering 110hp.

While the Magic Cargo feature means that the long-wheelbase version has a maximum volume of 4.4m3, the Crew Cab body also features a sliding bulkhead, giving greater flexibility with the ability to extend cargo space or passenger seating, according to the specific requirements.

Payloads reach as high as a tonne, with the E-Doblo’s battery pack reducing that to 800kg on both wheelbases. Cargo capacity is unaffected though, with the diesel-powered and electric models offering the same volume in the load bay, with enough room for two Euro pallets.

Fiat Doblo: Safety First

The New Doblò is equipped with 17 active safety and security systems, including traffic sign recognition, lane-keeping assist and driver attention alert. The Stellantis Grip Control System will also be available, providing greater traction in tricky conditions like snow, mud or sand, as well as the hill descent control system for gradients of more than 3%.
