Volkswagen is bringing updates to the Volkswagen e-Transporter, adding more range, faster charging and the option of all-wheel drive to its mid-sized electric van range.

The changes closely mirror those already announced for the Ford E-Transit Custom, reflecting the shared mechanical platform between the two models. The result is a more usable electric Transporter that addresses some of the limitations of earlier versions.

Bigger battery, faster charging

The headline change is a new 70kWh usable battery, replacing the previous 64kWh unit. Volkswagen says this increases the e-Transporter’s WLTP range to up to 236miles, an improvement of around 13%.

In real-world terms, that extra capacity should make the e-Transporter easier to deploy on longer or more variable daily routes, reducing the need for mid-shift charging and making it a more realistic replacement for diesel vans.

When it does need charging, performance there has also been improved, with the updated e-Transporter now supporting DC rapid charging at up to 125kW. At a suitable public charger, the battery can be topped up from 10–80% in around 30 minutes, roughly ten minutes quicker than before.

Volkswagen also points out that a short ten-minute charging stop can add approximately 60 miles of range, which should help operators minimise downtime during the working day.

All-wheel drive option arrives

The e-Transporter will also be available with 4Motion all-wheel drive. This adds a second electric motor to the front axle, working alongside the existing rear-mounted motor.

Because the two motors are not mechanically linked, torque can be distributed rapidly between the front and rear axles depending on conditions. Volkswagen says this improves traction and stability on wet roads, loose surfaces and construction sites, extending the e-Transporter’s appeal beyond purely urban work.

The system integrates with the van’s electronic stability control and traction control systems, using braking and torque distribution to limit understeer or oversteer when grip is limited.

Power options unchanged

Despite the drivetrain updates, the familiar e-Transporter power outputs remain. The all-wheel drive system will be offered with three power levels: 136hp, 218hp, and 286hp, giving operators a choice based on payload, towing, and performance requirements.

Updated Volkswagen e-Transporter availability

The updated battery, charging and 4Motion upgrades will be rolled out to the Volkswagen e-Transporter range in early 2026. Pricing and detailed specifications are expected to be confirmed closer to the opening of order books.
