Chinese newcomer Gecko Motors has unveiled its first European model, the MagicWay electric van and innovative range extender, at the IAA Transportation show in Hannover. It’s the brand’s first foray outside China, and hopes to appeal to UK and European fleet markets with a bold promise: up to 620 miles of range and a class-leading payload.

Battery Range and Range Extender

The Gecko MagicWay will be offered in two core configurations: a pure‑electric EV delivering up to 341 miles of range, and a range‑extended electric vehicle (REEV) version that combines a petrol engine with the electric motor, pushing WLTP range beyond 620 miles.

Both models are powered by a 150kW (204hp) electric motor with a maximum of 330Nm of torque, while the range extender model also gains a 60kW (82hp) engine.

Power comes from an 83kWh battery on the electric model, and a smaller 34kWh battery backed up by the petrol engine in the REEV option. DC fast-charging capability is rated at up to 120kW, which means a 30% to 80% charge should take around 30 minutes.

Digital Chassis and Class-Leading Cargo

Gecko’s ‘digital chassis’ integrates battery, thermal management, steering, braking, and suspension for maximum interior space and structural rigidity, which Gecko says should translate to good stability and agility.

The van’s cargo volume spans from 7.1 to 11.1m³, while payload reaches up to 1,366kg – higher than most 3.5t eLCV competitors. The load area has rear 270‑degree doors, a low floor height of just 495mm, and an internal width of 1,250mm to ensure Euro pallets slide in without issue.

UK‑specification is a long way from being finalised, but Gecko confirms standard fit includes a reversing camera, front and rear parking sensors, 360‑degree around‑view monitor, heated steering wheel and seats, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus a 12.3-inch touchscreen system running Gecko’s own operating system, which supports voice control, OTA updates and fleet management tools.

The van also features real‑time cargo weight and temperature monitoring, overload alerts, and battery thermal management for all‑weather operations.

Jeff Liu, founder and chairman of Gecko Motors, says expanding into Europe underscores the company’s commitment to “innovation and sustainability,” and highlights its advanced digital chassis as key to unlocking smarter transport: “Europe leads the global transition toward smarter transportation, and we are thrilled to play a key role.”

At present, Gecko has confirmed production will begin in China in early 2025, with UK availability expected later in the year. Pricing is yet to be announced, but Gecko says final figures will be “highly competitive,” and warranty cover will extend to five years.
