Volkswagen has revealed the next-generation Transporter ahead of the IAA Transportation show in Hanover, marking a significant update to the long-running van series. The new model, built around the underpinnings of the Ford Transit Custom, features a range of improvements to enhance its practicality for commercial users while embracing modern powertrains, including plug-in hybrid and electric options for the first time.
Key updates to the Transporter include increased cargo space, enhanced payload capacity, and improved towing ability. The maximum payload now reaches 1.33 tonnes, up 130kg from previous models, while the towing capacity has been increased to 2.8 tonnes, offering more flexibility for those needing to haul heavier loads. The van’s interior has also been rethought, emphasising ergonomics and ease of use, and now includes a digital cockpit combined with traditional buttons and switches.
The new Volkswagen Transporter will be available in several configurations tailored to different commercial purposes. These include the standard panel van, a panel van “plus” that incorporates a full-length load bay alongside a reduced-width second row of seating, a crewbus for passenger transport, and a platform version with an extended wheelbase. Volkswagen will also offer an all-terrain PanAmericana version, catering to more rugged conditions. High-roof and extended wheelbase options will also be available for increased cargo space and flexibility.
In line with the increasing focus on sustainability, the latest Transporter introduces hybrid and fully electric powertrains. Volkswagen is offering three turbocharged diesel engines (TDI) ranging from 110hp to 170hp. The more powerful TDI variants are available with an optional 8-speed automatic gearbox, with some models also offering the company’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive system. The eHybid plug-in hybrid version features a system output of 232hp and has an automatic gearbox as standard. For those opting for fully electric versions, the e-Transporter will be available with outputs of up to 286hp with a 64kWh battery capacity.
The first Transporters should arrive in the UK later this year, with Hollywood star Jason Statham (from The Meg, Fast & Furious 7, and The Transporter
) heading an advertising campaign. Pricing has yet to be revealed, but expect a starting price of around £35,000 plus VAT.
